French drain questions, answered
A French drain runs $60 per linear foot installed across Dallas-Fort Worth — that is the all-in number, not a materials price. A typical 40-foot run with one catch basin comes to $2,640; a 100-foot run with two basins is $6,480. Catch basins are $240 each installed.
Excavation of the trench, rigid perforated PVC in a filter sock, filter fabric, washed drainage gravel, the fittings, and the outlet — either daylighted at grade or a pop-up emitter. No stone, no finish work, no permit or engineering line: a drain is drainage.
North Texas sits on expansive clay. Clay holds water instead of letting it through, so after a heavy rain the water has nowhere to go but across your yard, against your slab, or onto the neighbor. A drain gives it a path with a slope and an outlet.
A basin is the grated inlet that collects standing water at a low spot and drops it into the line. One basin at the worst puddle is typical; two when there are separate low spots or a downspout to tie in. Each is $240 installed.
Most residential runs are one day on site. Longer runs, rock, or tie-ins to existing downspouts and sump lines can push to two.
